Autumn has arrived together with shorter days, first freezes, colourful leaves, chestnut figurines and ubiquitous squirrels. It is a time of nostalgia and musical gatherings, such as jazz festivals held throughout Poland at this time. That’s why the Instrument of October is the guitar – one of the most universal and popular musical instruments, also used for jazz improvisations.
The guitar belongs to the group of plucked string instruments; it usually has six strings, although there are versions with four, five or even eight or twelve strings. Types of guitars differ in construction, sound and purpose – the most basic division is for acoustic and electric guitars, but their diversity is much greater.
The Hollow Body type is prevalent among the jazz community. Its semi-hollow construction provides a warm, full sound that perfectly suits jazz standards, giving each composition a slightly melancholic yet deep tone – just right for the autumn weather. Have you heard about a Cigar box guitar that uses an empty cigar box or other wooden container as a resonator? Do you know a Harp guitar with any number of additional unstopped strings tuned to different tones?
There are many more interesting facts about the guitar. We encourage you to visit our Pictures and Scores collections for more information about this fascinating instrument!
