Violin or viola? Viola or violin? What do you choose?
In August, the winner, and, at the same time, the Instrument of the Month, is viola – a bowed string instrument.
It originates from the Baroque as an accompanying instrument, is slightly larger than a violin and stood in its shadows for long. With time, its warm, deeper and softer sound was appreciated, and the 19th century was a blooming period for viola compositions. Solo works for viola were written by such famous composers as Niccolò Paganini, Johannes Brahms, Krzysztof Penderecki and Grażyna Bacewicz.
Would you like to find out the differences between the viola and the violin? For more information about this instrument and about violists, visit our section Pictures and Online Encyclopaedia. We encourage all lovers of string instruments – let the soft sounds of viola charm you. That’s our suggestion for summer August evenings. And what about the repertoire? As always, we share a few inspirations -> Scores.
We also have a holiday bonus – a colouring book with a viola motif. Have fun!
