The saxophone, a woodwind instrument designed in 1840, had a difficult beginning. The destruction of a shipment with a copy to be presented at an exhibition in 1841, difficulties in patenting the instrument by the designer, and the unfavourable approach of supporters of the traditional orchestra line-up. Despite all the adversities, the saxophone finally gained a position in the symphony orchestra in 1844. However, it achieved real success by conquering the musical world of jazz.
On the birthday of the instrument’s creator, Adolphe Sax, we celebrate Saxophone Day. On this occasion, we have a proposition for you – take a look at the collections of the Polish Music Library in search of music for the saxophone, archival photographs of the instrument and information about famous saxophonists. And if you feel like giving colour to this instrument yourself, use the colouring books we have prepared.
