Naumann Karl Ernst, *25 August 1832 Freiberg, †15 December 1910 Jena, German conductor and composer, and the grandson of Johann Gottlieb. He studied music privately with M. Hauptmann, E.F.E. Richter, E.F. Wenzel, and H. Langer in Leipzig, and with J. Schneider in Dresden. He also attended university in Leipzig, earning his doctorate in 1858 and becoming a professor in 1877. From 1860 to 1906, he served as the university’s music director and city organist in Jena. Ernst Naumann’s compositions (orchestral, chamber, choral works, and song collections) were published primarily in Leipzig. Ernst Naumann collaborated on the edition of Bach’s works (including 6 volumes of cantatas, after 1882, and 9 volumes of organ works in performance editions, 1899–1904). He is also the author of the work Über die verschiedenen Bestimmungen der Tonverhältnisse und die Bedeutung des pythagoreischen oder reinen Quintensystems für unsere heutige Musik, Leipzig 1858.
