Hitzelberger, Sabina (EN)

Biography and Literature

Hitzelberger Sabina, nee Renk, *12 November 1755 Randersacker (near Würzburg), †Würzburg (?), German singer (coloratura soprano). From the age of 10, as a student of a convent school in Würzburg, she sang solo parts in church compositions; her further musical and vocal education was supervised by D. Steffani. Hitzelberger’s voice with a three-octave range, original timbre, and great technical efficiency soon earned her recognition in court circles. In 1776, she went to Paris, where she took part in Concerts Spirituels and Concerts des Amateurs. She gave concerts mainly in Würzburg; all that is known is her performance in Frankfurt am Main in 1783. Her teaching activities were also known, with Hitzelberger using her own method of learning singing. In 1777, she married the court flutist and composer, Franz Ludwig Joseph Hitzelberger, with whom she had four daughters with vocal talent. The prematurely deceased Catharina Elisabeth (1777–1795, alto) and Kunigunde (1778–1795, soprano) were known for performing duets.
